Laboratory of Landscape-Water-Ecological Research and Nature Management

The Laboratory of Landscape-Water-Ecological Research and Nature Management develops several lines of investigations. The hallmark of all works of the laboratory is the landscape approach developed by Prof. Y.I. Vinokurov, Prof. V.I. Bulatov, Y.M. Tsimbaley (PhD), and L.N. Purdik (PhD). New studies in the field of landscape geography and landscape ecology are also performed by the laboratory.

The most important and distinguishing features of landscape works are the reflection of spatial and temporal organization of geosystems, landscape indication of various phenomena, etc. Under the leadership of D.V. Chernykh (Dr.Sc), a landscape group has prepared several dozens of multi-scale landscape maps for different regions of Asian Russia based on the structural-genetic approach. The map "Landscapes of Altai (Altai Republic and Altai Krai)" published at the Novosibirsk Cartographic Factory at a scale of 1:500000 merits notice as the first experience in the medium-scale landscape mapping of a large mountainous region. The traditional research topic of IWEP SB RAS is the development of theory and methodology of regional nature management, the study of nature management processes in specific conditions of Siberian regions. Special attention is paid to the agrarian nature management, widespread practically in all regions. Much research is devoted to the problems of international cooperation in the transboundary river basins (the Irtysh River and its tributaries), the regions of the Greater Altai (Kazakhstan, China, Russia), and the Russian-Kazakhstan steppe borderland. The laboratory recently headed by N.I.Bykov (PhD) deals with dendroecology and tree-ring indication as a part of landscape-indication studies. The investigations of geomorphological processes, carried out by S.G. Platonova (PhD) and her group, are of special importance.
