Laboratory of Hydrobiology

The Laboratory of Hydrobiology is the youngest scientific unit of the Institute established in 2019. It specializes in studying the regularities in the formation and dynamics of biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems influenced by natural and anthropogenic factors; the analysis of features of structure and functioning of aquatic communities in different-type water bodies; the development of scientific and methodological approaches to estimate the level of anthropogenic impacts with allowance made for impacts and reservoir types, as well as structural-functional organization of aquatic communities. The laboratory staff pays special attention to the studies of biological invasions, including the analysis of ways of introduction, naturalization and relationships of alien species with native communities, as well as to the development of new approaches to assessment of biological pollution level and determining factors affecting invasibility.

In recent years, the laboratory has been developing new lines of investigations related to the analysis of phylogenetic and functional diversity of benthic communities and functional ecology of aquatic plants. Its investigations cover a wide variety of aquatic ecosystems throughout Russia: from springs to large river systems, from small floodplain reservoirs to large deep lakes, from the Arctic to subtropical water bodies. However, the main objects of study are the Ob River (including the Novosibirsk Reservoir) and its tributaries, Lake Teletskoye, as well as mountain rivers and lakes of Altai.
